"I've hit the hard end. Seen the irrelevance of all endeavour. "
— Arbiter

Hard End is the second episode of the sixth season of Arby 'n' the Chief.

Summary[]

Master Chief follows through with his decision to apply to the TOSERS in-game police organization to have his online multiplayer access reinstated. Arbiter refuses to join him, unable to shake himself out of his depressive funk.

Plot[]

The Arbiter is sitting in the bathtub with Master Chief knocking at the door, asking if he is in there. Arbiter asks for Chief to go away, and claims to have realized "the cold truth", that both of their lives have no meaning. After the two argue, Chief asks Arbiter to stop so they can sign up for TOSERS. Arbiter clarifies that he doesn't want to join because the idea of "game police" sounds stupid. Chief asks Arbiter what, if everything is pointless, is the point in crying about it, before going to sign up with TOSERS, leaving Arbiter in the bathtub.

A player named Kevin walks into a line leading into the TOSERS application room, intending to sign up, where he meets Cameron and Cody, the former security guards for Trent Donnovich's wedding. Kevin asks them if this is the line to sign up for the TOSERS. They confirm this, but dismiss Kevin as a child who doesn't deserve to be part of TOSERS. A supervisor comes out and announces that the people who want to sign up can now go in. Cameron and Cody, along with several other players, rush in, but Kevin is blocked from entering because the last slot is filled by Chief, who suddenly rushes in to the room.

As the Chief walks in, he notices Cameron and Cody, who recognize him from the wedding crash four months prior. The supervisor explains that the players applying will be pitted against each other in a round of Slayer to show their skills. The top three players will be chosen for interviews with the Basic Division's administrator, and the other players will be rejected. The supervisor also warns the potential recruits of a clan of hackers, and the threat of being banned by them, though also informs them that the possibility of the clan appearing in the match is very unlikely.

As the match begins, Chief quickly falls behind Cameron and Cody, who taunt him. Chief then swears, and the supervisor warns him that he will be disqualified if he continues. Chief begrudgingly complies and returns to the match.

In the distance, the supervisor notices a stranger approaching: Kylie, a member of Chaos Theosis. Unaware of her identity, the supervisor asks her if she intends to join TOSERS, and then asks her to leave when she says no. However, Duncan and Adam arrive as well. Chief, Cameron and Cody, witness from afar as the supervisor is unsuccessful at banning Adam, after the latter used crude language. Finally, Clyde arrives and frags the supervisor, banning him. The four hackers then split up, and proceed to frag every other player in the match.

Chief, Cameron and Cody are quickly cornered by Duncan and Adam. Chief attempts to kill Duncan, to no avail, because the hackers have non-degrading overshields. Duncan explains that since the three of them can't leave the game either, as this would also result in a ban, the only way to avoid getting banned is to survive until the match ends, in four minutes. Seeing no alternative, Cameron and Cody start to plead for their account. However, Arbiter suddenly arrives and assassinates Adam, and kills Duncan using a plasma pistol/magnum combo.
